Raise Hem Hem are an Edinburgh-based all girl
quartet who will re-create a 1920s cabaret atmosphere in the dungeons of the City Café!
Alluring front vocals, double bass, accordion,
an array of percussive objects and fine harmonies sung by four sexy and mischievous women
straight from the Edinburgh grass-roots music scene. Stories of love and loss as found in
Berlin's 'Schlager', Weill and Brecht's Threepenny Opera and more contemporary material
with a similar sentiment.
Raise Your Hem's eclectic repertoire features classics
by Jacques Brel and Tom Lehrer and picks up on Yiddish theatre. Both familiar and less
known songs e.g. by Tom Waits and OiVaVoi are re-invented by adding harmony singing,
instrumental interludes and theatrical choreography. From intimate and macabre to funny,
Raise Your Hem shine by not taking themselves too seriously, creating an atmosphere of
pure enjoyment and often silliness.
Original material especially developed
for the show ranges from atmospheric to circus style and polka, with elements of audience
participation and plenty of opportunity to dance your socks off!
Sandra Alland, Edinburgh-based writer, events
promoter & multimedia artist says "an up-and-coming quartet of sublimely quirky
musicians!"
Raise Your Hem have
performed at events and venues in and around Edinburgh such as Neue Liebe and Itsy's
Cabaret, Cowgate Cartoon, at the GRV, Portobello Town Hall, TePooka, Out of the Blue's
Drill Hall and many more.
