An hour with one of the most innovative
and original comics working today.. Interactive, intelligent, freewheeling, stupid,
political, pointless. John started doing stand-up in 1996 but left the circuit in 2000 to host and
co-create The RDA with John Gordillo, (aka: The Recommended Daily
Allowance) an inventive, often rule-breaking nightly format for BBC Choice. The show
featured a plethora of TV firsts and events, one of which led to the show
being cancelled after 2 series.
Although this is his first solo show, John has
directed and co-devised a number of fringe productions since 2003, most notably two
Perrier-nominated offerings with Reginald D Hunter (White Woman & A
Mystery Wrapped in a Nigga). He also directed and wrote for Reginald D Hunter:
Pride and Prejudice and Niggas , Ealing Live in Edinburgh!, Shazia
Mirza: Fun (which saw the comedienne garner the best notices of her career) as well
as solo shows from Simon Farnaby, Ben Willbond and Katherine Jakeways, among many others.
This year, on the fringe, hes directing Shazia Mirza and Patrick Monahan and script
editing three other shows.
Away from Edinburgh hes directed Reg Hunter
in the West End, the Hollow Men off-Broadway, and two seasons of the acclaimed weekly gang
show Ealing Live!. Hes also directed & produced concert videos for
Eddie Izzard, a Comedy Lab, Blackout (which he also wrote) that hes
turned into a screenplay which he will direct, with Aristocrats director Paul
Provenza producing. .
On TV hes directed sketches with Jason
Byrne, David ODoherty, Dawn French, Gods Pottery, Steve Hughes, Katherine
Jakeways, Jim Jeffries, Josie Long, Jo Neary, Howard Read, Rob Rouse, Penny Spubbs
Party and The Trap.
John returned to stand-up in 2006 and feels
invigorated to be back. The show is called Free, cause he doesnt
entirely know how his life is going to be come August and thats how much it costs to
get in. Hes proud to be making his debut at the Free Festival, believing that theres
nothing to stop good shows finding an audience without both parties feeling ripped off. He
hopes the ethos behind the free festival grows and grows.
So if you enjoy the show, please
donate whatever you think its worth. All shows undertaken on a No Grin/No Fee basis.

"Back on the circuit after a few years
hiatus, John Gordillo remains a refreshing performer with a canon of intelligent,
provocative material. He picks away obliquely and relentlessly at his subjects to find
fresh jokes, taking comedy away from tried-and-tested formula into more unexpected
terrain" - Chortle
