HOW ANNE ROBINSON PAID FOR MY
WEDDING Comedian Andy White won an episode of the Weakest Link. His
prize was a wife. In his first show at the Laughing Horse Edinburgh Free Festival 2007,
entitled It Started With A Quiz, he tells how and why this happened.
Before he appeared on the quiz show, he'd agreed with his fiancee that if he
won he would spend the winnings on their wedding. "We always said that we'd get
married at some point, but we could never afford to it the way we wanted: a big affair
with family and friends. The show I was on was a special for up and coming comics,
therefore the prize money was greater than in ordinary shows, so we thought, 'What the
hell, if I win why not spend the money on that.' My female friends thought it was
romantic; my male friends thought it was moronic."
Anne Robinson preserved her chilly persona nearly to the end. " We
didn't see her before the show. Between takes she would disappear off to her
dressing room, presumably for a cup of tea and a shot of botox. After the show she let her
guard drop and gave me a hug. 'I'm sure your mother will be very proud,' she said. I was
quite touched, but I still checked my pockets to make sure she hadn't nicked my wallet.
Andy has always loved quizzes. He's the most fanatical member of his local
pub quiz team. Last time we won, I was a little tipsy, so I stood in the middle of the bar
and gave an acapella rendition of Queen's "We Are The Champions". My team left
quietly, not knowing whether to put their hands over their eyes or ears. In the show
Andy will talk about the two loves of his life: his wife and useless information. "I
know how many triskedekaphobiacs there are in Zambia, but I'm 38 and I still haven't
learned to drive." He had the opportunity to combine his two passions after the
wedding. "Two days after the wedding we flew off to Cyprus. On our first night, the
hotel had a bar quiz that my wife and I won. For me, it was the highlight of the
honeymoon."
Andy White is a
Brummie who escaped from a call centre to become a stand up comic. He combines silly
voices and a mad afro to devestating comic effect. Andy's humour embraces silly voices,
funny faces, observational humour, topical humour and his mixed race background. He can do
material that's clever, cheeky, sick or just silly. His performance can shift from deadpan
to loud and physical. Andy has played to a wide variety of audiences, adults and
children, both at home and abroad, in comedy clubs, theatres, universities, Radio and TV
shows, and at corporate entertainment events.
